Harmony in the Family

Spring Forest Qigong

We generally relate the term harmony to music. And we all can feel when the harmony flows easily. But what happens when the music becomes disharmonious? How do we attune ourselves to a frequency filled with light and beauty?

Beautiful music is a composition of many notes and vibrations flowing together in harmony. We can view our personal relationships the same way. Beliefs and emotions are part of the composition and flow of the family’s musical blend; and just like in an orchestra, where every musician contributes to the grand performance, in the family each member contributes their own vibration and frequency to the overall harmony.

The physicist Albert Einstein taught us that everything is energy. He also taught us that energy cannot be created or destroyed, but can be transformed. But thousands of years before to Einstein’s time, practitioners of Chinese medicine already understood this; and not only did they understand this, they understood it in relation to human health. That is, when there are energy “blockages,” or when energy is lacking in the body, a person’s physical, emotional, and spiritual health can suffer. Conversely, if energy is flowing smoothly, one can live a long and healthy life.

We also know that energy attracts similar types of energy. Have you ever made goofy faces or acted silly to get a small child to laugh when they were upset? How quickly did the child stop crying and begin laughing and acting silly with you? We truly have the ability to quickly transform energy in ourselves and others.

There are so many things that can impede the flow of harmony within a family. If one family member has a disease or serious illness, it affects everyone. Someone may have to take on the role of caregiver, another may have to give up certain activities to accommodate the person who is ill, or some members of the family may feel neglected due to the amount of time and resources needed to care for the sick family member.

Death, divorce, loss of a job… all of these can create negative emotions within the individuals of a family. And just as these can cause blockages within an individual, so can they cause blockages within the family. Just like the body, the many parts of the family are really one!

There also is the possibility that the home itself can be the source of disharmony, or that the land it sits on carries a negative history. That’s why Native American cultures use the ceremony of “smudging” to clear the energy of a home or property. Feng Shui is a Chinese system based on a similar understanding; through principles of design and right placement of furniture and objects for smooth energy flow, it inherently corrects and enhances harmony in the home.

So, there are many different reasons why there may not be harmony in the family and in the home. But the real question is: What can we do about it? With the techniques of Spring Forest Qigong, we learn to apply the understanding of the Five Elements within ourselves as a way to transform energy quickly and easily.

Lack of harmony in a family generally has to do with emotions. Anger, fear, extreme emotions, anxiety, worry, depression, or sadness can cause damage to various energy systems in our bodies.

If the family is sad because of a loved one’s death, it can cause damage to the lung energy system. If there is anger within the family, it can damage the liver energy system. Extreme emotions can damage the heart energy system, anxiety and worry can damage the stomach energy system, and fear can negatively affect the kidney energy system.

By transforming the negative emotions that may be passing through the family into positive emotions, the family can begin to heal. For example, if a grieving family brings the emotion of contentment into their life, over time the grief will lessen, and contentment will be felt more often.

With the Five Element Healing Movements, Master Lin has designed a beautiful flow of qigong exercises to help open up all these various energy systems. Even better, a positive emotion is also brought into each movement, helping to transform any negative emotions into healthy emotions and restore inner harmony.

Through the practice of qigong, energy blockages are removed so that energy can flow through the body in perfect balance. This perfect balance allows for healing, peak performance, inner peace, harmony and happiness. And all it takes is one member of the family to create the intention and begin moving and balancing their energy. Even if the rest of the family is not interested in doing qigong, it is okay! Remember that energy begets energy, which means one person can create a massive change simply through positive intention and action. It really is that simple!

In Spring Forest Qigong Level One, we learn what energy is and how we can transform it. We learn physical movements that move the energy in our bodies, unblocking the areas where there is too much energy, and restoring it where there may not be enough. We learn how to balance our own energy, which is the first step in helping bring balance to others.

You may be thinking that this sounds too simple. You may think it may work for some people, but that the harmony in your family has been so disrupted that it can never be restored. As Master Lin would tell you about qigong, even if you do not feel the energy being moved—it is still moving. Even if you do not believe you can transform energy—it is still being transformed. In fact, energy is transforming all of the time.

Know that when you act from a place of unconditional love, kindness, forgiveness, and compassion, harmony CAN be restored in any family.

Sometimes it is not so easy to forgive when we have been hurt. Maybe someone has made us very angry. Maybe we have been dealt some harsh blows—literally or figuratively. When we have been harmed in some way, it can be difficult to just let go and be happy.

But by taking baby steps towards forgiveness, one can gradually move from anger to happiness, from guilt and worry to peacefulness. There is a beautiful prayer called the Buddhist Prayer of Forgiveness, which can be recited every day to help. Over time, forgiveness will fill your heart:

If I have harmed any one in any way, either knowingly or unknowingly through my own confusions, I ask their forgiveness. If anyone has harmed me in any way, either knowingly or unknowingly through their own confusions, I forgive them. And if there is a situation I am not yet ready to forgive, I forgive myself for that. For all the ways that I harm myself, negate, doubt, belittle myself, judge or be unkind to myself, through my own confusions, I forgive myself.

Spring Forest Qigong is based on unconditional love, kindness and forgiveness, knowing that we all can find ourselves out of balance at times. By focusing on our heart and creating the intention to heal emotional wounds, the family’s energy will be rebalanced and harmony will fill the home.
