A Wood That Evolves With Your Journey

Ebony is admired not only for its strength but for the way it transforms through years of use.

As your hands move across each bead during chanting and meditation, the natural oils from your skin gradually polish the surface, creating a rich satin sheen that becomes increasingly luminous over time.

Like your own spiritual practice, its beauty is revealed through consistency.

The more it is used, the more it reflects your journey.

One Set. Two Ways to Practice.

108 Beads

The 108 Afflictions

Buddhist teaching counts 108 afflictions that bind the mind to suffering — reached by multiplying every way we experience the world: six senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, thought), three feelings each (pleasant, unpleasant, neutral), two states (pure, defiled), across three times (past, present, future).

6 × 3 × 2 × 3 = 108. One bead moved for each affliction released, one full mala for a complete cycle of practice.

28 Beads

The 28 Lunar Mansions

Ancient Chinese astronomy divides the night sky into 28 constellations, grouped in fours of seven and guarded by the Azure Dragon (East), Vermilion Bird (South), White Tiger (West), and Black Tortoise (North).

To wear all 28 is to carry the sky’s full protective circuit — worn daily as a quiet talisman for safety and good fortune.

Legends and Stories of Ebony

I. A Wood Grown Slowly, Held for Centuries

Ebony takes hundreds of years to mature into the dense, near-black heartwood prized by craftsmen. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, it was collected as tribute wood for the imperial court — reserved for the finest furniture, ceremonial instruments, and ritual implements, and known in Chinese tradition as Wumu, Black Rosewood.

Its rarity and slow growth earned it the name “black gold” — a material so dense and fine-grained it is nearly free of visible pores, resistant to decay, and capable of holding form for generations.

II. The Wood of Stillness

In Buddhist tradition, ebony is considered sacred and has long been shaped into prayer beads and ritual implements, believed to aid meditation and the quieting of a restless mind. Its density is treated symbolically as a kind of shield — dispelling negative energy and steadying the wearer through periods of stress or pressure.

“Favored by scholars and nobility alike — a symbol of quiet authority, discipline, and inner strength.”

III. Grain & Patina

Cool and smooth as jade to the touch, ebony’s grain is so fine it can develop an almost mirror-like sheen. Unlike woods that lighten with age, ebony’s black deepens — and with years of handling, subtle violet undertones begin to surface, visible only to its keeper.

Naturally colored, with no artificial dye, its weight offers a distinctly grounded, reassuring feel in the hand — heavier and cooler than most beads, and unmistakably premium.
