The Transition Energy of August: A Time to Gather Your Energy and Prepare for a New Season
By Master Chunyi Lin
The Turning Point Between Summer and Fall
Nature is one of our greatest teachers.
If we pay attention, she gently shows us that life is always moving through cycles of growth, transformation, rest, and renewal. Just as day becomes night and spring becomes summer, our own bodies and energy naturally follow these rhythms.
On August 7th, according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine calendar, we enter Liqiu (立秋)—the Beginning of Autumn. Although the weather may still feel like summer, the energy of nature has already begun to change.
This is one of the most important energetic transitions of the year.

The Energy Begins Turning from Yang to Yin
Throughout the summer, Yang energy has been at its peak.
Yang energy is warm, active, expansive, creative, and outward-moving. It inspires us to travel, socialize, create, and accomplish.
But beginning around August 7th, nature quietly begins shifting.
The days gradually become shorter.
The evenings become cooler.
The plants continue to bloom, but beneath the surface, more energy is being directed into the roots.
Nature is preparing.
The same transition is happening inside your body.
In the Yin-Yang symbol, this moment is represented by the place where Yang reaches its fullest expression and naturally begins giving birth to Yin.
Nothing in nature remains at its peak forever.
Balance comes through allowing the energy to transform.
When we live in harmony with these natural cycles, our own healing becomes easier.
The TCM Perspective: Protecting Your Lung Qi
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, autumn is governed by the Metal Element, which is closely connected to the Lungs and Large Intestine.
Although we are only entering the beginning of this season, this is the perfect time to begin strengthening Lung Qi before autumn fully arrives.
Healthy Lung Qi supports:
- Healthy breathing
- Strong immunity
- Emotional resilience
- Healthy skin
- Greater vitality
- The ability to let go of grief, sadness, and what no longer serves you
Just as trees begin releasing their leaves, autumn reminds us that healing often begins by gently releasing what we no longer need to carry.
Don’t Continue Living Like It’s Mid-Summer
One of the biggest mistakes people make during this seasonal transition is continuing to expend energy as if it were still the height of summer.
During the peak of Yang energy, there is an abundance of Qi available to support activity.
But as Yin begins to grow, nature invites us to become more intentional with our energy.
This doesn’t mean stopping your activities.
It means becoming wiser with how you use your Qi.
Instead of constantly pushing forward, begin creating moments of stillness.
Allow yourself time to recharge.
Listen more carefully to what your body is asking for.
Nature is beginning to conserve energy—and so should we.
Calm the Mind by Bringing Energy Down
As Yang energy begins to change, many people notice their minds becoming busy.
You may experience:
- Overthinking
- Worry
- Mental fatigue
- Irritability
- Anxiety
- Feeling overwhelmed
Often this simply means there is too much energy gathered in the head.
The solution is not to fight the thoughts.
Simply guide the energy back down into your body.
Practice #1: Return to Your Lower Dantian
Drop your shoulders and relax.
Place your hands over your navel.
Men: Left hand on the navel, right hand on top.
Women: Right hand on the navel, left hand on top.
Close your eyes.
Take three slow, gentle breaths.
Feel your awareness settling into your Lower Dantian.
This simple practice helps your Qi return to its center, allowing the mind to become peaceful and the body to relax naturally.
Technique #2: Visualize the Yin Energy of Water
Balance Yang with the Healing Energy of Water
If you feel thoughts ignite into emotions of anger, you can bring the yin energy of water literally into your focus, your awareness.
You can do this inwardly by visualizing yin energy or outwardly like meditating with water, face the water, even a glass of water, or among living green plants. This is a simple way to find balance.
Drink plenty of water, especially if you are going to be outside. The sun’s energy is actually more intense during August and you should avoid being outside from noon to 4pm, especially from 2 to 4. The light from the sun at that time is very dry and very invasive. People who have lung problems or skin problems should avoid being outside and exposed to the sun at that time. If you must be out be sure to protect your eyes, and skin and lungs.
Begin Nourishing Your Lungs Today
The transition into autumn is an ideal time to care for your lungs before the cooler, drier months arrive.
Simple practices can make a tremendous difference.
Practice your Qigong breathing.
Smile into your lungs.
Spend time among trees.
Breathe deeply in fresh morning air.
Stay well hydrated.
Protect yourself from excessive dry heat, especially during the hottest hours of the afternoon.
Every small act of care strengthens your Lung Qi and supports your health throughout the seasons ahead.
August is a good time to start paying more attention to your lungs. The more focus you have on keeping your lungs strong now the better your lung energy will be for the fall and winter to come. This is very important.
Live in Harmony with Nature
Life will always have seasons.
There will be times to expand.
There will be times to rest.
There will be times to let go.
There will be times to begin again.
The more closely we follow the wisdom of nature, the more easily our Qi flows.
Balance is not something we force.
It is something we allow.
As this beautiful transition into autumn begins, slow down just enough to listen.
Gather your energy.
Strengthen your lungs.
Open your heart.
Trust the natural rhythm unfolding within you.
When you live in harmony with nature, healing becomes effortless.
In high yang energy, your awareness of your vision, your attention and your qualification of the energy can become more known to you during this time.
Life has many peaks and valleys but the more we live in balance and harmony the more rainbows we’ll have, even if only in our hearts.
Love & Blessings,
