Each bead naturally displays six delicate grain lines formed by the tree itself—not carved or manufactured. These distinctive markings have long been associated with the Six Realms of existence and the Six-Syllable Mantra, Om Ma Lee Bae Mae Hong , making Liudaomu one of the most recognizable and respected woods for prayer beads.
According to traditional Buddhist legend, Liudaomu originated from the staff of Manjushri Bodhisattva after it was planted on Mount Wutai. For generations it has been cherished as a symbol of wisdom, inner peace, resilience, and steady spiritual cultivation.

Buddhist teaching counts 108 afflictions that bind the mind to suffering — reached by multiplying every way we experience the world: six senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, thought), three feelings each (pleasant, unpleasant, neutral), two states (pure, defiled), across three times (past, present, future).

Legends and Stories of Liudaomu
I. The Sacred Origin
On Mount Wutai — one of Buddhism’s four sacred mountains — grows a wood found nowhere else in such abundance. Legend holds that when Manjushri Bodhisattva returned from India, the wooden staff he carried bore six deep grooves along its length. He planted it into the mountainside, and from it grew the tree the world now calls Liudaomu: the Six-Path Wood.
Because of this origin, the wood is regarded as sacred, blessed by the same hand that wields the Wisdom Sword — the blade said to cut through worry, delusion, and affliction.
II. The Dragon-Subduing Wood
In Han Chinese folklore this same wood carries a second name — Jianglongmu, the Dragon-Subduing Wood. It appears in The Generals of the Yang Family, one of China’s most beloved storytelling epics, as the weapon carried by Mu Guiying, the legendary heroine who broke through the impenetrable Heavenly Gate Formation. A wood born of a bodhisattva’s staff, wielded in legend by a warrior — Liudaomu carries both stillness and strength.

III. The Grain & the Living Wood
Slice a bead of Liudaomu and six pale lines radiate from its center — never carved, always born in the grain. Devotees read them as the Six Realms of Reincarnation, or as the Six-Syllable Mantra, Om Mae Lee Bae Mae Hong, worn silently on the wrist.
Held daily, the wood is called “alive” — cool in summer, warm in winter. Cream-white when new, it ripens with years of handling into honey-gold, then a deep reddish-brown, and finally a semi-transparent amber some call “jadeification.” Watching this slow change is part of the practice itself.
