Your Intention Gives Qi Direction

The Power of Intention in Qigong: Energy Flows Where Your Attention Goes

Discover how setting a positive intention can help direct your Qi, deepen your Qigong practice, and support your body’s natural healing abilities.

What if one of the most powerful parts of your Qigong practice isn’t just how you move your body, but what you are thinking and feeling while you practice?

In Spring Forest Qigong, Master Chunyi Lin teaches that your intention is one of the most important tools you have for working with your Qi.

Your intention gives your energy direction.

When you practice Qigong, you aren’t simply moving your arms, breathing deeply, or relaxing your body. You are also using your mind and heart to create a clear, positive vision of the health and well-being you want to experience.

Energy flows where attention goes.

This simple teaching can transform the way you approach your daily Qigong practice.

What Is Intention in Qigong?

Think of your intention like setting a destination before beginning a journey.
If you don’t know where you want to go, it’s difficult to know which direction to take.
But when you have a clear destination, you can begin moving toward it.

The same principle applies to your Qigong practice.

Rather than focusing on what feels wrong in your body, you focus on the positive state of health, balance, and harmony you want to create. Your intention becomes a guiding focus for your practice.

Why Your Intention Should Always Be Positive

One of Master Lin’s most important teachings is to focus on what you want to create, not what you want to eliminate.

This may sound simple, but it can make a meaningful difference in how you experience your practice.
Think about how often we describe our health in terms of what we don’t want.

“I don’t want to feel stressed.”
“I want to get rid of this pain.”
“I don’t want to be tired anymore.”

When we use these statements, our attention remains centered on the discomfort or problem we are experiencing.

In Spring Forest Qigong, we practice shifting that attention toward the positive outcome we want.

Instead of thinking about pain, imagine comfort.
Instead of focusing on stress,
imagine peace.Instead of concentrating on fatigue, imagine feeling energized and revitalized.

Your intention should describe the health and happiness you want to experience, as though you are already experiencing it.

This is not about denying how you feel. It is about giving your mind a positive direction during your practice.

An Example: Setting an Intention for Back Pain

Imagine you are experiencing discomfort in your lower back.

You might naturally begin your Qigong practice by thinking:

“I want to get rid of my back pain.”
Notice how this statement keeps your attention on the pain itself.

Master Lin encourages us to shift our focus to the positive result we want to create.

Try saying:

“My back pain is completely gone. My lower back is completely healed, completely healed! Every muscle, every tissue, and every cell in my lower back is healthy, strong, and filled with healing energy. It feels so good!”

Now, instead of concentrating on discomfort, you are imagining your back feeling healthy, comfortable, and strong.
As you practice, allow yourself to experience the feeling of having a healthy back.

Imagine moving freely.
Imagine standing, walking, or bending comfortably.
Imagine how happy and grateful you would feel.

Don’t just think about the positive outcome. Try to feel it.

In Qigong, this combination of intention, imagination, and positive emotion is an important part of the practice.

The Power of Feeling Your Intention

Setting an intention is more than repeating positive words. Master Lin teaches us to bring our heart into the practice.

For example, if your intention is to feel peaceful… Imagine what peace feels like.

Feel your shoulders relaxing.
Notice your breathing becoming gentle and natural.
Imagine your heart becoming calm and open.

If your intention is to feel healthy and energized, imagine yourself waking up refreshed, moving comfortably, and enjoying your day.
Bring happiness, gratitude, and love into that experience.

The more clearly you can connect with the positive feeling you want to create, the more meaningful your intention can become.

In Spring Forest Qigong, we use this positive emotional connection to help guide our awareness and Qi during practice.

How to Set a Powerful Healing Intention

You don’t need a complicated affirmation or a long meditation. A simple, positive intention is enough.

Here are four steps you can use before every Qigong practice.

1. Decide What You Want to Create

Ask yourself: “What would I love to experience in my body and my life?”
Perhaps you want to feel more comfortable, peaceful, energetic, balanced, or joyful.

Be specific about the positive outcome you want.

2. State Your Intention in the Present Tense

Rather than saying “I hope” or “I want,” imagine your desired outcome as though it is already happening.

For example:

Instead of focusing on…Focus your intention on…
“I want to get rid of my back pain.”“My back is completely healed. It feels wonderful to move freely and comfortably.”
“I don’t want to feel stressed.”“My mind is peaceful, my heart is calm, and my body is completely relaxed.”
“I don’t want to feel so tired.”“Every cell in my body is filled with fresh, vibrant energy. I feel wonderful!”
“I wish I could sleep better.”“I sleep deeply and peacefully. I wake up refreshed and energized.”
“I want to stop feeling anxious.”“My heart is filled with peace, love, and happiness. I feel safe and calm.”

These are examples of positive Qigong intentions, not promises of specific health outcomes.

3. Imagine and Feel the Result

Close your eyes for a moment.
Visualize yourself experiencing the positive outcome.

What does your body feel like?
How happy and grateful do you feel?

Allow those positive feelings to become part of your practice.

4. Release Your Intention and Enjoy Your Practice

Once you’ve set your intention, you don’t need to keep repeating it or force anything to happen.

Begin your Qigong movements with a peaceful mind and an open heart.

Trust the process of practicing without worrying about whether you’re doing everything perfectly.

Bring Your Intention into Every Qigong Movement

Your intention doesn’t have to stop once your practice begins.
You can gently carry it with you throughout your movements.

As you practice Moving of Yin and Yang, imagine your body’s energy coming into beautiful balance.

As you practice Breathing of the Universe, imagine fresh, healing energy flowing throughout your entire body.

As you practice Connecting with your Heart’s Energy, imagine your energy channels opening and your whole body becoming filled with light, love, and vitality.

You don’t need to visualize every detail. Simply maintain a gentle awareness of the positive state you want to create.

Your movements, your breathing, and your intention work together to make your Qigong practice a more mindful and meaningful experience.

What If You Find Yourself Thinking About Pain or Negative Feelings?

It’s completely natural for your attention to return to an area of discomfort, especially when you’re experiencing pain or stress.

If this happens, don’t become frustrated with yourself.
Simply notice where your attention has gone and gently bring it back to your positive intention.

For example, if you notice yourself thinking, “My back really hurts today,” you can gently redirect your attention:
“My back is healthy and strong. I feel comfortable and relaxed. Healing energy fills every cell.”

You can acknowledge what you’re experiencing without making it the center of your practice.

And if you don’t feel happy or positive right away, that’s okay, too.

You don’t have to force happiness. Just invite it.

In Spring Forest Qigong, we say Good, Better, Best. Whatever you can do today is good.

A gentle smile, a peaceful breath, and a positive intention are all wonderful places to begin.
