Ask Master Lin

Master LinDo you have something you would like to ask Master Lin?  Each month we will select a question that has been sent to us and publish the answer in this newsletter (your name will not be used). Please keep in mind that Master Lin does not diagnose medical conditions and will not be able to personally answer each question. If you would like a member of our support team to get back to you, please make note of that in your e-mail or letter. Send questions to newsletter@springforestqigong.com.

Question: Would it be appropriate to do the Small Universe meditation while going for a walk outside on a nice day, or is it best done sitting or standing still? Thank you.

Answer: If you are able to do the Small Universe while walking, it can be a wonderful experience. If you are sitting, you may close your eyes and go into the emptiness while doing the Small Universe, and this will give you yet another type of experience with this wonderful meditation. Both are great experiences and both open blockages, clear channels, gather energy, and move that energy.

Remember, it is always good, better, and best, and if walking is another way to help you gather and move your energy more effectively, it may be the best way for you on any given day. Sitting may be the best at other times. The "best" changes due to circumstances.

In my mind it is always best to simply do the Small Universe in any way you can!

SFQ International Guild Update

The Guild meeting for September 27 will be at the Eisenhower Center, 1001 Highway 7 in Hopkins, Minnesota. This meeting will be focused on qigong and creativity. Do you write poetry? Sculpt? Paint? Are you a photographer, an archiver, or a quilt-maker? Are you involved in home design, cooking, gardening, or genealogy? If you "create" in any way, we would be delighted to have you join us at this meeting to display your work (tables will be provided)! You are invited to talk about your process and how it has been influenced by qigong, if you'd like, but no speaking is required. Please contact Deanne Kroll at support@sfqguild.com for more information.

  • The next Guild phone healing meditation with Master Lin will be on the fall equinox, September 21. Information and instructions for this meditation were sent to all current Guild members via e-mail on Friday, September 5.

    DivineFlowersGarden
  • The September 13 Guild meeting was our annual end-of-summer potluck, intended to have been held in the lovely gardens of Meg Devine.
Last year's weather was glorious--warm and sunny--and we meditated sitting on the rocks among the flowers and enjoyed our potluck outside on the lawn. This year the rain came down steadily, and we meditated and ate together in Meg's lovely home instead.

SFQ ReachOut Event at

Veterans for Peace

National Convention

Jerry Wellik volunteered to represent the Spring Forest Qigong Guild ReachOut program at the Veterans for Peace National Convention on August 28 and 29, 2008, and found it to be an extraordinary experience. He served as Lead Volunteer, and was in his element, sharing experiences and stories with veterans of all ages who came to or near the ReachOut table.

Sixteen ReachOut volunteers covered two shifts at this event and had in common a sense of serving and connecting heart-to-heart with veterans. Volunteers shared information and sent light and love energy to participants in subtle ways as well as doing some formal energy balancing.

ReachOut volunteers spoke with approximately 145 veterans in two days. Information brochures were given to each person who came by, and  brochures and coupons (for discounts on healings) were also left with John Varone, our liaison at VFP.

Master Jim Nance

In the last issue of the Energy Connection you had a chance to choose which of these statements is true about Master Jim Nance:

Master Nance in Shadea.  He has studied with many different spiritual leaders, including shamans from 14 different countries in Africa.
b.  He has played basketball professionally in Europe.
c.  He has a master's degree in career counseling and worked with students and inner city youth for more than 30 years.

If you chose "a," you were correct! Master Jim has studied with many, many spiritual leaders. Actually, if you chose "b," you were also correct. He has played professional basketball in Europe; and, as you may have guessed by now, "c" is also a correct answer.  Read on for more information about this very interesting man:

Energy Connection: What brought you to qigong?

I first heard about qigong back in 1968 when I was studying kung fu--not fighting formally, but trying to learn it in a purist way. A kung fu master had heard about my group and came to take a look. He told me I was opening up psychically, but others with me weren't moving in the same direction spiritually and that I should do an internal martial art like tai chi or qigong.

Energy Connection: So did you begin studying qigong at that time?

Not right away. I got very involved in sports--playing basketball--and ended up on a professional team in Turkey. I played there until I injured my back and knees (or ankles?) and had to leave. I had strongly identified myself as a basketball player, so I kind of lost my identity after that.

I finally realized my issues were spiritual and not vocational, so I started studying many different philosophies, reading everything from Bertram Russell to Chogyam Trungpa to Suzuki Roshi. I became attracted to the idea of living life from moment to moment.

Root Vegetable Soup

In Chinese medicine, root vegetables have warming qualities that help get you ready for cold weather. This Root Vegetable Soup is just the thing to help you prepare for what's inevitably ahead!

SoupVegetablesDid you know root vegetables are a good hedge against high gasoline prices? They are usually inexpensive and can last a long, long time if stored properly in a cool, dark place. (That's where the term "root cellar" originated--a place to store autumn's root harvest through the winter months.)

Renowned cookbook author Mollie Katzen says, "Rutabagas, turnips, and parsnips don't normally get a whole lot of attention, but this delicious soup, at long last, provides them their fifteen minutes of fame. I never thought something so earthy could be this beautiful: pale sunny yellow with spots of creamy white, gold, and bright orange peeking through. It's naturally sweet, too, and slightly hot from the ginger and the optional horseradish. Wait until your family or friends have taken a taste before you tell them what's in it--they'll be really surprised."

Services Available at SFQ

In-Person Sessions at the SFQ Center

During your half-hour session at the SFQ Center, you will sit comfortably and share your concerns with a Master Healer. He or she will move a hand several inches from your body to detect and remove energy blockages. Active exercises and/or healing meditations may be suggested for further benefit. When he is available, Master Lin will spend the last five minutes of your session continuing to assist you in your healing journey.

Schedule a private instruction session (30 minutes for $40 or 60 minutes for $60) and get one office session at the discounted rate of $70 (a $25.00 savings).  The office session must be scheduled at the time the private instruction is scheduled.

Take an active exercise class (series of four), and get four office sessions at the discounted rate of $70 (a total savings of $100.00!).

Phone Appointments

Appointments with Master Lin, Master Nance, or one of the Master Healers, are also available by telephone. During a phone appointment, you briefly describe your concerns and then sit quietly while blockages are being detected and removed. Following the session, you may meditate or just rest for about 30 minutes to allow the energy to continue to move.

Schedule a private instruction session via the telephone and get one phone session at the discounted rate of $59 (a $21 savings). The phone session must be scheduled within 30 days of the private instruction.

Distance Sessions

With this type of session, there is no physical or verbal contact involved. Using simple information (a name, a location, a brief description of the area of concern), Master Lin, Master Nance, or one of the Master Healers will remotely detect blockages and work to eliminate them.

Active Exercise Classes

Two Level One active exercise classes are available at the SFQ Center on Fridays at noon. As of September 2, they will also be offered on Tuesday evenings. These classes focus on techniques to help relieve pain, reduce stress, and develop physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.
